The working alliance occurs when a counsellor and client are working together to address issues that the client brings to each session.
Carl Rogers, who is pictured above, famously described the essential elements of that allow for counselling sessions to functionally occur, that being it is essential for a counsellor to engage unconditional positive regard for their client, demonstrate empathy for their client and treat their client in a genuine fashion. Edward Bordin further noted that the working alliance exists when client and counsellor are focused on mutually agreed upon goals and when there exists trust and respect in the interaction present.
I am incredibly thankful for the learning I have gained about how to best form effective working alliances in counselling, through the training I have gained and the mentoring I have received in my career.
Please find in this section artifacts which illustrate the learning I have gained in regard the Working Alliance.
